Eloy Songao Inos (born September 26, 1949 in Saipan , † December 28, 2015 in Seattle , Washington ) was an American politician . From 2013 until his death, he was governor of the Northern Mariana Islands .

Career

Eloy Inos attended Mount Carmel High School in Saipan and then studied at the University of Guam until 1981 . Then he worked for the Tax Service in the Pacific Islands Trust Territory . He later became vice president of the Northern Mariana Islands clothing company Tan Holdings Corporation . Politically, he was a member of the local Covenant Party until 2013 . Then he switched to the Republican Party . Between 1990 and 1992 he was a member of the Saipan City Council. Between 2006 and 2009 he was Minister of Finance for the Northern Mariana Islands.

Following the resignation of Timothy Villagomez, who had been convicted of various violations of the law, Inos was appointed the new lieutenant governor of his territory on May 1, 2009 . He held this office until February 20, 2013. On that day, Governor Benigno Fitial resigned when he was on the verge of impeachment on corruption charges. According to the constitution of the territory, Lieutenant Governor Inos was promoted to the new governor of the Northern Mariana Islands and from then on held this office. After his death, Ralph Torres took the oath of office as governor.
