Carlos Sablan Camacho (born February 27, 1937 in Saipan ) is an American politician . Between 1978 and 1982 he was governor of the Northern Mariana Islands .

Career

Carlos Camacho studied at the University of Hawaii . This was followed by a medical degree at the Fiji School of Medicine in the Fiji Islands . After his admission as a doctor he practiced in this profession until 1967. Then he began a political career. He became a member of the Congress of Micronesia . Between 1969 and 1977 he was Minister of Health ( Chief Medical Officer ) of the Northern Mariana Islands. From 1975 to 1977 he headed the local branch of the Democratic Party on Saipan. In 1976 he was also a delegate to a constitutional convention in his home country.

In 1977 Camacho was elected the first governor of the new US outer territory. He held this office between 1978 and 1982. Then the office fell to the Republican Pedro Tenorio . After the end of his time as governor, Carlos Camacho was no longer politically active.
