Benigno Zaccheo

Benigno Zaccheo (born October 5, 1812 in Brissago , † May 7, 1877 in Cannobio , Piedmont ) was a free thinker and radically liberal Swiss politician from Ticino.

Life

He was the son of a merchant (Pietro Zaccheo), his mother's maiden name was Maria Storelli. He attended the Collegio Papio in Ascona, and from 1833 to 1839 Zaccheo studied medicine at the University of Pavia (Italy). He worked as a doctor in Brissago, Ascona and Canobbio.

From 1850 to 1863 Zaccheo was a member of the parliament of the Canton of Ticino. For a short time, from 1856 to 1857, he sat in the Council of States , the small chamber of the Swiss parliament. He took part in armed uprisings in Italy several times (Milan uprising of 1848, first and second Italian war of independence , radical uprising of 1855).
