Benjamin Stolberg
Benjamin Stolberg (born November 30, 1891 in Elisabethgrad , † January 21, 1951 in New York ) was an American social scientist and journalist of Russian origin.
Life
The son of Ukrainian-Jewish emigrants grew up in Munich , where he attended the Maximiliansgymnasium in 1902/03 and graduated from the Realgymnasium. In 1908/09 he emigrated to the USA. He first lived with relatives in St. Louis and studied medicine at the private Washington University in St. Louis . From 1909 to 1914 he lived off odd jobs in various parts of the United States. From 1914 to 1917 he studied without a degree at the also private Harvard University . By 1919 he studied sociology at the University of Chicago . From 1921 he increasingly made a name for himself as a political editor: He began as editor of the "Journal of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers" in Cleveland , Ohio, moved to the Chicago Tribune , the left-wing liberal weekly magazine The Nation , to the likewise left-wing weekly New Republic and as a columnist for the New York Evening Post . In 1923 he moved to New York City , became involved as a critic of the conservative US Labor Organization , was promoted to chair of the League for Industrial Democracy in New York and was co-editor of the literary magazine "The Bookman". In the 1930s he was considered one of the harshest critics of the New Deal and was a leading authority on questions of communism and the working class in the United States. He joined the defenders of Leon Trotsky (including John Dewey ) and published numerous critical political writings up to his death. As a staunch anti-Stalinist, he advocated the persecution of communists and their sympathizers under Senator Joseph McCarthy .
Stolberg's son David Stolberg (1927–2011) worked as a journalist and editor; the granddaughter, Mary M. Stolberg (* 1956) is a writer.
