Benny Fredriksson (2013)

Benny Holger Fredriksson (born July 2, 1959 in Hägersten , Sweden ; † March 17, 2018 in Sydney , Australia ) was a Swedish actor, theater director and managing director of the Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm.

Life

Fredriksson studied from 1979 to 1982 at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Stockholm. At the age of 16 he was a ticket seller in the Stockholm City Theater ( Stockholms stadsteater ). After his studies he worked as an actor and director at the Royal Opera , the Gothenburg City Theater, the Riksteatern, the Drottningholm Palace Theater and the Stockholm City Theater. Later he was artistic director at the Parkteatern and head of the ensemble at the Stockholm City Theater, before becoming managing director and theater director at the Stockholm City Theater in 2002.

After Frederiksson had received sharp criticism in the context of the #MeToo debate for his allegedly tough management style and was accused in an article in the Aftonbladet of tolerating a working atmosphere in which employees were sexually harassed, he firmly denied the allegations. Shortly afterwards, Fredriksson stepped down as Managing Director in December 2017 after 16 years. The city of Stockholm set up a commission of inquiry. Their final report was published on March 22, 2018, several days after his death became known. It says that some employees are actually said to have been dissatisfied with Fredriksson's management style. The report found no evidence of sexual harassment. Shortly before Benny Fred Eriksson had suicide committed.

His death sparked a discussion in Sweden about #MeToo and the tabloid Aftonbladet. The latter had spread anonymous allegations against him that a later investigation found to be baseless. The Aftonbladet's head of culture, Åsa Linderborg , also had to admit after Fredriksson's death that she had spread a false accusation against Frederiksson.

Private

Fredriksson grew up in a working-class household in Hägersten as the son of taxi driver Nils Holger Fredriksson and cleaner Ulla Maria Fredriksson. From 1989 until his death in 2018 he was married to Anne Sofie von Otter , Sweden's most famous mezzo - soprano . On March 17, 2018 Fredriksson killed himself during a vacation in Sydney, Australia itself .

Awards

Benny Fredriksson was Stockholm of the Month in October 2003.
