Bent Sørensen (born October 20, 1943 in Klim , Nordjylland region ) is a Danish chess player . In 1983 he became European champion in correspondence chess .

At the age of 5 Sørensen learned to play chess from his two older brothers. He won the city championship of Aalborg twice , with the team from Nordre Aarhus he was five times Danish champion. In 1963 he took part in the Youth Chess Olympiad in The Hague, in 1965 and 1966 he played in the student Olympics in Sinaia and Örebro . In 1971 and 1979 he finished in the rear third at the Championships of Denmark.

He has held the title of FIDE Master since 2011 . His best Elo rating was 2343. This he achieved in May 2011. In the senior European Championship 2016 in Yerevan he reached in the age group 65+ points with Valentin Bogdanov and Viktor Kupreichik third. For this success he was awarded the title of International Master .

Correspondence chess

For correspondence chess he was inspired by Jørn Sloth , the winner of the 8th correspondence chess world championship. In the 1970s he qualified for the 13th European Championship, where he reached 5th place in 1979. He also played successfully for Denmark at the 8th Correspondence Chess Olympiad 1975 and 9th Correspondence Chess Olympiad. His greatest success was in 1983 when he won the 20th European Championship.

Private

Sørensen studied mathematics and physics in Aarhus. Then he taught teachers at a high school in Aalborg.

Bent Sørensen is not related to the winner of the 19th European Championship Arne Sørensen .
