features

The bugs are 6.1 to 7.5 millimeters long. They have conspicuous white spots on the cuneus of the hemielytras and two parallel pale spots on the otherwise dark scutellum . The front of the pronotum is narrower than the head including the compound eyes . The tips of the thighs ( femora ) of the middle and rear legs are broadly black in color. The fourth antennae is pale in color.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed throughout the Mediterranean , east across Asia Minor to the Caucasus . In the north, the distribution extends to the south of Great Britain and over the southern Baltic Sea area to the center of Russia. It occurs almost everywhere in Germany and is only rare in the north and northwest and may be missing locally. In the south, such as in the sandy areas of southwest Germany, it is sometimes common. In Austria it is particularly widespread in the east. In Great Britain it occurs locally in the south of England and in Wales between Essex and Pembrokeshire . Mostly open, dry, warm sandy soils with litter and low vegetation are populated , but also ruderal areas and fallow land.

Way of life

The animals feed on seeds of various types of plants that have fallen to the ground. In their habitats often grow heather ( Calluna vulgaris ), Scotch broom ( Cytisus scoparius ) or field wormwood ( Artemisia campestris ). The adults rarely climb herbaceous plants or even woody trees. As with most other Rhyparochrominae , one generation develops in the year, overwintering takes place as an imago in the litter and the imagines of the new generation appear from around August.
