Berengar (Ebrach)
Berengar (also Berngerus ; † August 20, 1276 in Ebrach ) was abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach from 1271 to 1276 .
Life
Berengar was born at the beginning of the 13th century. The place of birth is unknown, but a place in the Franconian area is likely due to the later entry into the monastery in the Steigerwald . The parents and any siblings of the future abbot are not mentioned in the sources. Berengar entered the monastery early and made his vows here. He rose quickly within the monastery hierarchy and was mentioned in 1271 as a prior under Abbot Nicholas.
After Abbot Nikolaus resigned , Berengar was chosen to succeed him, the thirteenth Abbot of Ebrach. During his tenure, he increased the monastery property. In 1272 he bought various farms from Sibertus von Windsheim , and in 1273 further acquisitions followed. In 1274, the Roman-German King Rudolf I of Habsburg confirmed the parish of Schwabach, which had been owned by the monastery for centuries.
In the same year Abbot Berengar received the Gangolfsberg with all its affiliations. A year later, in 1275, he bought goods in Unterspießheim. The year 1276 saw the construction of a chapel at the monastery gate. Eberhard Fuchs von Dornheim donated the chapel as a burial place for his family. In the same year Abbot Berengar resigned to his office and, already ill, continued to live in the monastery. He died on August 20, 1276.
