  • 814 to 835 Count (or Duke) of Toulouse
  • 832 to 835 Duke and Margrave of Septimania and Count of Barcelona.

Life

As an advisor to Pippin I of Aquitaine, he advised him not to rise up with his brother Lothar against their father, Emperor Ludwig the Pious , in 831 . But Pippin I listened to Bernard of Septimania , who encouraged him to revolt.

Berengar, who was on the emperor's side, seized Bernhard's counties of Roselló , Rasés and Conflent .

Finally, continued victories by the imperial troops in 832 forced Pippin and Bernhard to appear before the emperor. Pippin was deposed and banished to Trier . His land was given to Charles II the Bald . Bernhard was accused of infidelity and lost all of his possessions in Septimania to Berengar. This now combined the old title of Count of Toulouse with that of Septimania / Narbonne .

833 Berengar lost his counties Pallars and Ribagorça to Aznar I. Galíndez , Count of Urgell and Cerdanya .

In 834 Pippin was reconciled with the emperor and defeated his brother Lothar. Bernhard, who had supported Pippin, now claimed his former title as a reward. Berengar, who had always been loyal to his master, both the emperor and Pippin, was stripped of all his lands in 835, except for the county of Toulouse.

In 835 the emperor invited Berengar and Bernhard to make a decision about the possessions in Septimanien and Gothien . However, Berengar died unexpectedly on the trip and so the counties there remained in the hands of Bernhard.
