Lists on the subject |
The Beretta model M1918 , also known as Moschetto Automatico Beretta Mod. 1918, abbreviated MAB 18 , was a submachine gun that was incorporated into the equipment of the Italian army in 1918 .
history
The weapon was designed as an automatic rifle with a mass lock and a bar magazine inserted from above. It was made from a barrel of the double-barreled Villar Perosa , which was fitted with a shaft of the Vetterli-Vitali Mod. 1870/87 carabiner. The bayonet holder and the bayonet of a Carcano cavalry carbine Mod. 91 were mounted on the barrel . The first MAB in 1918 were purely automatic weapons. Since the magazine ran empty very quickly, a second trigger for the single shot was introduced after 1918 .
The weapon can be regarded as the first submachine gun that was issued to some units of the Italian storm troops, the so-called Arditi , towards the end of the First World War . The weapon developed by Tullio Marengoni, who also designed the successor model MAB 38 , was introduced shortly before the German MP18 developed by Hugo Schmeisser , which was issued to the German assault battalions on the Western Front in the summer of 1918 . The MAB 18 was used in the Spanish Civil War , the Abyssinian War and until 1941 in Libya in the Africa campaign . The MAB 18/30 variant was even used by the Italian police and some units of the Italian army until 1945, and the variant was used by the state forest guard even after 1945.
variants
In the semi-automatic model MAB 18/30, developed in 1930, generally known as the Siringone (syringe) because of its syringe-like shape , the magazine was inserted from below. In addition to the new ground lock, the MAB 18/30 also has a different stock and a different bayonet than the MAB 18. The 1918/30 model was also manufactured in Argentina by Hafdasa as the C-1, which formed the basis of the Ballester Riguard submachine gun . Whether the MAB18 / 30 can be viewed as a variant of the MAB 18 or as an independent further development is controversial.
