Mountain church from the north

The Protestant mountain church in Sachsenhausen , a district of Frankfurt am Main , is named after its municipality, the Sachsenhausen mountain.

Emergence

In the 1950s, a residential area developed on Sachsenhausen Mountain, for which a Protestant parish hall was built in 1958 on Sachsenhausen Landwehrweg. An architectural competition was held for the construction of a new church, which the architect Werner W. Neumann won. Construction began in 1964 and the church was consecrated on August 21, 1966. The mountain church is a Hessian cultural monument .

description

The mountain church stands on the rising terrain southeast of the south cemetery on the corner of Hainer Weg. The cubic building was previously exposed to concrete and has now been painted over in white. The external appearance is characterized by a varied formwork structure designed by the sculptor Hans König . The 42 meter high bell tower in front of it is clearly visible from afar. The nave is set back from the street, creating a square. The openwork tower contrasts the monolithically closed church building. The brick side rooms with small windows are arranged in the north.

The entrance is in the protruding tower. A connecting passage leads to the interior. In contrast to the facade, the interior is characterized by warm and darker colors. The walls are made of red brick, the ceiling is clad with wood, and the floor is covered with dark panels. A circumferential ribbon of windows, also designed by Hans König, illuminates the room. It forms the joint between the roof and the walls so that the ceiling appears to float. Two bench blocks for about 420 people face the raised altar. A cross-shaped window emphasizes the place for the baptism. The font was created according to the architect's plans.

The organ is located on the exposed concrete gallery in the east. The instrument with 24 registers and two manuals was made by Förster & Nicolaus Orgelbau between 1967 and 1970 .
