history

The Berlin Yacht Club emerged on November 25, 1867 as the Berlin Sailing Club from the Stralauer Tavern Society founded in 1835 . The association was thus founded as the third sailing club in Germany, after the sailing club Rhe (1855) and the association Seglerhaus am Wannsee (VSaW; founded on October 6, 1867). At the beginning of the 1890s, the first clubhouse was opened on the club's own waterfront property. On February 26, 1885, the Berlin Sailing Club merged with the Stralau Sailing Club of 1880 , which also emerged from the Stralau Tavern Society , to form the Berlin Yachting Club with 143 members and 67 boats. In 1895 there were 10 club members among the starters at the Kiel Week . In 1900 the club member Paul Wiesner sailed first and second place in two competitions at the Summer Olympics . In the following decades further sporting successes of the Berlin YC followed.

The club house in Grünau was destroyed in the Second World War . From 1949 the VSaW granted the BYC members the right to host . A close cooperation was established between the two associations that continues to this day. In 1959, the Berlin YC moved to the other side of the water, to the Wannseebadweg. In the period that followed, the number of members increased and the sporting activities led to numerous national and international successes.

The club's youth work was awarded the Green Ribbon in 2016 for exemplary talent development in the club .

BYC and VSaW are celebrating the 150th anniversary in 2017 together. The new clubhouse was inaugurated on April 22nd, 2017 as part of the 150th anniversary celebration.
