The Sailing Champions League (abbreviation: SCL ; spelling : SAILING Champions League ) is a competition for sailing clubs that has existed since 2014 . Until 2018 it was a competition for European clubs - since 2019 clubs from Oceania can also qualify. The competition consists of three qualifying regattas and a final final. The best clubs of the national sailing leagues compete against each other in the qualifying regattas. The winner of the finals is entitled "Best Sailing Club of the Year".
history
After the German Sailing League was introduced as the first national sailing league in 2013 and the Danish Sejlsportsligaen in 2014 , a European sailing league was established with the SAILING Champions League, to which the participating sailing clubs qualify in their national sailing leagues. On June 17, 2016, the International Sailing League Association was founded in Hamburg as an umbrella organization comprising the national sailing leagues and the SAILING Champions League.
In 2018, in addition to the SAILING Champions League, a Youth SAILING Champions League for club sailors between the ages of 13 and 21 and a Women's SAILING Champions League for all-women teams from international clubs were held for the first time.
concept
format
A regatta is held over four days. Up to 32 clubs compete against each other in a qualification regatta. In 2019, the seven best clubs in each qualifying regatta will qualify for the final of the SAILING Champions League.
The sailing is based on the low-point system that is widespread in sailing . On a regatta day, several flights are sailed, which are made up of several races. Eight boats of the boat class J / 70 sail against each other in a race . A race consists of two laps on an "up-and-down" course marked by buoys and takes about 15 minutes. Several races follow one another, in which each participating club sails once. These races together result in a completed flight. The number of races and flights may vary depending on the number of participating clubs.
In the 2018 season, the Final Series format was used for the first time in the finals. In the end, the four best clubs sail for the overall victory of the SCL. The team that is the first to achieve two victories is the winner of the SCL. Only the first place only needs one victory in the Final Series to win the SCL. This means that there can be a maximum of four races in the Final Series.
qualification
In 2014 and 2015 the SCL consisted of only one final and there was no regulated qualification mode. In 2016 there was a qualifying regatta for the first time before the final , for which the best clubs of national sailing leagues qualified. In 2017 there were two qualifying regattas for the first time before the final, to which the qualified clubs were drawn. The five best clubs in a national sailing league have been qualifying for the qualifying round of the SAILING Champions League since 2019. These clubs will be drawn into three separate qualifying races. The seven best clubs in each regatta qualify for the final.
The reigning winner of the SCL is already qualified for the qualification round of the SCL by his victory. The host clubs automatically qualify for the respective regatta .
In addition to the qualified clubs, wild cards are given to other clubs in special cases .
Wild cards
In special cases, wild cards are given to sailing clubs. Nations in which a new national sailing league has been founded have the opportunity to have a club participate in the SAILING Champions League via wild card . Nations that have not yet had a national sailing league have the opportunity to have a team participate in the SCL, provided certain criteria such as club membership and proven, relevant sailing successes of the team are met.

Legend: The ranking in the Sailing Champions League is shown in bold (and in brackets) . To the left of the slash is the placement in a qualification regatta, to the right that in the final. If no number is given on the left and without a slash or on the right, the club did not take part in the qualification regatta or finals. Example: ( 3 /15) means "3rd place in the qualifying regatta, 15th place in the final." "Qualification by place ..." in the respective national league means that the club in question qualified in its national league for the SCL of the following year in the previous year .
