Mascot "Berlino"

Berlino , an anthropomorphic bear, was the mascot of the 12th IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009 . He distinguished himself through his interaction with various athletes.

Because of his constant presence and popularity with the public, he has been referred to in the media as the "real star" of the World Championships. In December 2009, Berlino was named Mascot of the year in the British newspaper The Observer . The Berlino team also received the Fair Play trophy from the Association of German Sports Journalists.

At the European Athletics Championships 2018 , which will also take place in Berlin, Berlino will be used again, his outfit was adapted to the motto of the event.

Appearances

Several meetings between Usain Bolt and Berlino received a lot of attention . The sprinter honored the mascot by wearing a T-shirt with the words "I am a Berlino" on it while preparing for the 200-meter run; an allusion to the quote " I am a Berliner " from John F. Kennedy's famous speech in Berlin. The next day, Berlino returned the favor with the words “I am a bolt” on his shirt . In a post-World Cup interview, Usain Bolt referred to Berlino as a friend.

Other meetings took place with Jennifer Oeser , Betty Heidler , Steffi Nerius , Robert Harting and Melaine Walker , among others .

Applications

In addition to the so-called walking act, Berlino was implemented or used in many other forms of media. In addition to classic 2D and 3D drawings, there were various video clips with Berlino, large banners (including on the Berlin TV tower and the town hall in Berlin), images on buses and Velotaxes, and life-size displays. In addition, a special cancellation and an online stamp was issued by Deutsche Post in honor of Berlino. Berlino was also used as an advertising figure for the sponsors, for example on five million beer bottles from the manufacturer Berliner Pilsener. There were even special pages and special children's pages on the topic of Berlino in the official program booklet for the World Championships.

Merchandising

Countless Berlino items were sold not only during the world championships, but also far beyond. There were not only plush bears in different sizes to buy, but also key rings, pins and T-shirts. In particular, the plush bears were traded at ten times the selling price on eBay due to their popularity.

The bear is still available in Berlin, but with a red jersey as the Berlin sports mascot.

Origin and development

Berlino was developed by the Organizing Committee of the World Athletics Championships (BOC 2009 GmbH). Communication and marketing specialist Björn Meyburg in cooperation with Infront Sports & Media AG was responsible for the entire creative development, planning, implementation and creation of the special and distinctive character.
