Satanic Warmaster is a Finnish black metal band. Because of her ideology expressed in texts and interviews, she is assigned to the National Socialist Black Metal .

Band history

Satanic Warmaster was formed by Satanic Tyrant Werewolf after he left the band Horna ; the idea to found the project arose in 1998. He also played in Warloghe and in side projects such as Pest, Blasphemous Evil, Shatargat and Blood Revenge; Shatraug von Horna also mentioned an NSBM project called Sacrificial Blood, which stylistically resembles the French bands and Graveland , to the Dark Blaze / Into the Pentagram ; There are no publications of this, however, an album of the same name by Satanic Warmaster was released in 2003. In 1999 Werewolf recorded the first two demos, another in 2000 and the Black Metal Kommando , originally intended as a debut album , which he recorded in November 2000, but only released in 2005. On the EP Black Katharsis he set the piece … Hiljaisuudesta, originally written in 1995 for his Shatargat project, to music . On the song Chapter 2: Chronicles of Thy Astral Blood from the EP … Of the Night , he collaborated with S. Noktu Geiistmortt from Celestia and Drakkar Productions , with whom he has a good relationship. The first albums of the project were released by Northern Heritage from Finland and, starting with the album offering blood, also by No Colors Records from Germany. The 2010 released album Nachzehrer and some other recordings were released by Werewolf Records, which is operated by Satanic Tyrant Werewolf. Werewolf Records also released some albums by the Finnish far-right band Goatmoon . In 2015, an LP was also released under the name Tireheb (allusion to Beherit ), on which Satanic Warmaster collaborated with Moozzhead.

style

Satanic Warmaster plays a raw black metal style that is based on that of older bands; As a selection of his influences, Werewolf names Vlad Tepes, Nåstrond , Black Funeral , Lord of Evil, Osculum Infame , Sarcófago , Morbid , Mayhem , Moonblood , Venom , Bathory and old Emperor on his MySpace page , opposite the Northern Heritage Absurd , Graveland and Mistreat . On the debut album Strength and Honor , isolated synthesizer sounds similar to those on Gravelands In the Glare of Burning Churches were used, the keyboard was then completely omitted on later albums. Shatraug compared the style of Satanic Warmaster to Absurd, Vondur and Abrupt . On the split EP with Akitsa he plays at a medium pace and in the style of the 1980s in the sense of Celtic Frost . Despite maintaining a typical style, Werewolf also uses atypical elements like in the song Hold on to Your Dreams on the split single with Krieg, a break in the style of Dissection .

ideology

The website Endstation Rechts describes the band as right-wing extremists and writes: "Satanic Warmaster is characterized by his explicitly National Socialist intentions, some of which are clearly recognizable in the names of the titles [...] and the texts". The texts of the project deal with nature, folklore , satanism , occultism and war. Compared to the Finnish metal webzine Imperiumi , Satanic Tyrant Werewolf described his personal convictions as pan-European, traditional Satanism, which aims at the improvement of the individual through the dark and destructive forces of nature and the cosmos; Satanism constitutes his worldview 100%.

But there are also pagan borrowings, for example in the texts to Raging Winter and The Blood of Our Fathers , in which reference is made to the ancestors and ancient gods; the latter describes the "pagan blood" of the ancestors as the guide of the strong. Since the lyrics also include passages like “Reign of tyranny, of magick and strength / Enthroned Aryan spirit the resurrection of our reich / Valor of pagan Europe / War and warrior's blood” ( Strength and Honor ) and “Sieg Heil! The sign of our cross rises " ( Wolves of Blood and Iron , both from the debut Strength and Honor ) include and because of release titles like Gas Chamber , split releases with bands like Evil, Stutthof and Aryan Blood and the Carelian Pagan Madness tour With the NSBM bands Absurd and Der Stürmer in 2008, the band is classified by critics as right-wing extremist, and on MySpace he names the right-wing extremist bands Lord of Evil and Osculum Infame as influences. Satanic Warmaster and the tour organizers denied this, Werewolf described the political allegations as unfounded and the lyrical interpretations as sick.

In 2001, Werewolf told Northern Heritage that he did not want the band to be understood as referring to National Socialism; but he could not blame anyone for this, it was to a certain extent intended, the project was also influenced by bands like Absurd, Graveland and Mistreat and had used samples from Adolf Hitler's speeches. Nevertheless, he insists that the concept of the band contains more than National Socialism. In the same year Shatraug von Horna described himself and Werewolf to the Einsatzkommandos' Zine as supporters of National Socialism. Werewolf said he was “in contact a few times” with Hendrik Möbus from Absurd and “always had a good impression of him” . “Of course” he “followed her musical career over the years and always enjoyed her music” .

In an interview with black metal news site Mirgilus , Werewolf noted:

“The influence cannot be denied, some of the most advanced social and political ideas were created during the iron regime of the Reich. Of course I am interested and feel strong sympathy for the ideals of that time. ”

“The influence [of the Third Reich ] cannot be denied, some of the most advanced social and political ideas arose during the iron regime of the Reich. Of course I am interested and have strong feelings for the ideals of this time. "

When asked whether it wasn't ridiculous that anti-Christian texts were accepted and those against Jews not, he replied:

“It is fucking ridiculous. It is ok to mock the 'King of the Jews' but not mock 'god's chosen race'. Fuck Yahweh and fuck Judaism. "

“It's damn ridiculous. It is okay to mock the 'King of the Jews' , but not to mock 'God's chosen people'. Fuck Yahweh and fuck Judaism. "

- Satanic Tyrant Werewolf

He described the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 as a possible hoax of the United States, which he called "JewSA", to legitimize its warfare.

In January 2008 the band was associated with NSBM in Finnish newspapers as they were supposed to perform with Absurd and Der Stürmer, whose member Hjarulv Henker names Satanic Warmaster as one of the few satanic bands he supports and who advocate the same cause, although pagan and satanist bands often reject each other. The event was organized by the Pagan Front. In the run-up, the concert caused a stir, as an anti-racist group warned citizens not to stay near the concert venue. The concert was sold out a few days earlier and was moved to a secret location after the protest.
