Black Funeral is an American black metal band. Andrew Jay "Akhenaten" Harris of the band Judas Iscariot credits her with doing a lot for the credibility of the US underground along with other groups .

Band history

Black Funeral was founded in 1993 by Michael W. Ford after the band Sorath broke up. In the same year she released her first demo, Journeys into Horizons Lost , which was re-released in 1994.

In 1995 Black Funeral's debut album Vampyr - Throne of the Beast was released via Full Moon Productions . In the same year, the band released the Demo Of Spells of Darkness and Death , on which the revised title of the first demo can be found. On the album Empire of Blood in 1997 Black Funeral released some material from the debut album again: six songs were new recordings with revised titles and lyrics and poorer production.

In 1998 the song Mourns a Lengthening Shadow appeared on the compilation A Tribute to Hell - Satanic Rites , which also includes exclusive titles by Mayhem , Mysticum , Diaboli , Acheron , Swordmaster and others. Black Funeral's song was not and will not be re-released without the compilation. The dark ambient album Moon of Characith , released in the same year, was intended to represent a declaration to the black metal scene. After this album things got quiet around the band when Ford founded the post-industrial project Valefor, released a few albums with it and in 2002 devoted himself to a new band called Psychonaut 75. Before he finished working with Black Funeral, he recorded the album Belial Arisin with a guest musician , which was based on lycanthropy , vampirism and demon worship . The original cover , which he got from Peter "PK" Kubik ( Abigor ), only appeared on the CDR version as it was banned by European distributors before it could be printed. In 2003 Ford decided to continue Black Funeral, but not live. Belial Arisin was released with a new cover under the name Belial Arisen by the Italian label Behemoth Productions and is the band's last pure black metal album; on Az-i-Dahak , Ford took on strong mechanical influences from his work with post-industrial projects. The title refers to the demon Azhi Dahaka from Persian mythology .

In 2005 the album Ordog (from the Hungarian ördög ' devil ') was released, to which Saint ov Gravediggers and the cannibal Nico Claux contributed lyrics. Ford plays with the former at Ordo Tyrannis, with Claux he published The Luciferian Tarot . Conceptually, the album is dedicated to the Persian Yatuk Dinoih .

In 2007 Ford worked with Dan from the band Vrolok on the album Waters of Weeping , which is based on the Qlīpōt . Content, the album is a three-part ritual for the invocation of the kabbalistic demon Chioa and dedicated to the ten spheres of qlīpōtischen tree of death.

In 2008 Marchözelös von Gräuen Pestanz joined Black Funeral. Both groups announced a joint split release called Formulation of Wamphyric Shades , due out through Behemoth Productions and Black Plague Records; on March 18, 2010, Gräuen Pestanz announced that the recordings for it had been completed. So far this split has not been released, Black Funeral released the next studio album Vukolak in 2010 . The EP Choronzon Blood Rite followed in 2012 .

In 2015 Azgorh, the singer of Drowning the Light , joined. In 2016 the album Ankou and the Death Fire was released .

Style and background

Black Funeral deals with vampirism , Luciferianism, Satanism and the ritual practice of the Left Hand Path in general. Ford's conception of Satanism as universal and multicultural, accordingly it refers, among other things, to the European folkloric ideas of vampirism and lycanthropy, the Kabbalah and Persian mythology.

At the beginning the band played traditional black metal, which was influenced by Burzum , VON , Blasphemy , Hellhammer / Celtic Frost , Mayhem as well as early Bathory and Emperor . Ford did not adopt the vocal style of the demo Journeys into Horizons Lost for later recordings. The debut album Vampyr - Throne of the Beast is produced raw, stylistically kept simple and contains ambient passages.

The last pure black metal album Belial Arisen is still reminiscent of Darkthrone , early Emperor, Bathory and Mayhem with a vocal style between Burzum and Darkthrone and is worse produced than many recordings of the "second wave of Black Metal", the later releases show industrial - Influences on. Ordog combines monotonous riffs with industrial / noise samples and rarely changing drum rhythms. Waters of Weeping connects one with Hellhammer and simplistic held Thorns comparable, heavy, slow and cold sound with the old style of Black Funeral represent the drums differs from the usual small drum - big drum - basin pattern, and has a rather post-industrial and ritual aura. The successor Vukolak is based on old Black Metal and was compared by their label Behemoth Productions with their old works as well as Vlad Tepes, Mütiilation and Nåstrond .
