Bernard Helffer (born January 8, 1949 in Paris ) is a French mathematician who deals with partial differential equations, spectral theory and mathematical physics.

Bernard Helffer, Oberwolfach 2005

He is the son of the pianist Claude Helffer and the musicologist Mireille Helffer. Helffer studied from 1968 at the École polytechnique and received his doctorate in 1976 with Charles Goulaouic at the University of Paris-South (Hypoellipticité pour des classes d'opérateurs pseudodifférentiels à caractéristiques multiples). From 1971 to 1978 he conducted research for the CNRS , from 1978 to 1989 he was professor at the University of Nantes and then professor at the University of Paris-Süd (where he also taught for five years at the Ecole Normale Superieure ).

In mathematical physics he deals with statistical mechanics, liquid crystals, superconductivity, semiclassical approximation and node lines in the ground state of Laplace and Schrödinger operators.

In 1991 he received the Prix Langevin of the Academie des Sciences and in 2011 the Grand prix fondé par l'État décerné par l'Académie des sciences.

1974 to 1978 he was secretary of the mathematics commission of the CNRS and from 1999 to 2004 he was a consultant for mathematics in the French ministry of education. From 2010 to 2012 he was President of the Société mathématique de France .
