Bernard Kamilius Membe (born November 9, 1953 ) is a Tanzanian politician .

biography

Membe, a member of the former Tanzanian Unity Party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), became a defense and national security analyst in the office of then President Julius Nyerere in 1977 . He carried out this activity under Nyerere's successor Ali Hassan Mwinyi until 1990. During this time, from 1981 to 1984, he also studied at the University of Dar es Salaam , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). After leaving the office of the President, he completed postgraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University (JUH) in Baltimore , USA between 1990 and 1992 , which he completed with a Master of Arts (MA) in International Relations. After returning to Tanzania in 1992, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, where he worked as a consultant until 2000.

In 2005 he began his political career with the election to the parliament, in which he represented the constituency of Mtama as a member of the CCM until 2015 .

In 2006 he was first Deputy Minister of the Interior and in the same year Deputy Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources. On January 11, 2007, President Jakaya Kikwete appointed him Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the cabinet of Prime Minister Edward Lowassa . He has held this office since February 2008 under Lowassa's successor Mizengo Pinda . He held the office of foreign minister until a cabinet reshuffle announced by President John Magufuli on December 10, 2015, after which Augustine Mahiga became the new foreign minister and Charles Kitwanga became interior minister, while Hussein Mwinyi remained defense minister. On December 23, 2015, Philip Mpango was appointed as the new finance minister.
