Bernard Pons (born July 18, 1926 in Béziers , Département Hérault ) is a former French politician of the Gaullist Union des démocrates pour la République (UDR) and later the Rassemblement pour la République (RPR). Between 1967 and 2002 he was a member of the National Assembly several times , Chairman of the RPR parliamentary group (1988–1995), Minister for Overseas Departments (1986–88) and for Building and Transport (1995–97).

Life

Resistance, medical profession

During the Second World War, Pons was involved in the resistance movement of the Résistance in the Forces françaises de l'intérieur (FFI) and the Francs-tireurs et partisans (FTP). After the end of the war, he studied medicine at the University of Montpellier and worked as a general practitioner in the Lot department between 1952 and 1967 .

Deputy and State Secretary

On March 12, 1967, Pons was elected for the first time as a member of the National Assembly as a candidate of the Union démocratique pour la V e République (UDR; Union of Democrats for the Fifth Republic) and was a member of the National Assembly as a representative of the Lot department until July 20, 1969 .

On June 22, 1969, Pons took over his first government office, namely as State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture in the Chaban-Delmas cabinet . In the first Messmer cabinet that followed , he served from July 6, 1972 to March 28, 1973 as State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

On March 11, 1973, he was re-elected as a candidate for the Gaullist party, which had since been renamed Union des démocrates pour la République , to a member of the National Assembly, to which he was a member until April 2, 1986. From March 11, 1973 to March 19, 1978, Pons represented the Lot department again for the UDR and then represented the Essonne department for the successor party Rassemblement pour la République (RPR) and, from March 16, 1986, an electoral district in Paris.

EU parliamentarians, ministers and group leaders

In the European elections in France on June 17, 1984 , Pons was also elected a member of the European Parliament . He was a member of the EU Parliament from July 24, 1984 to April 30, 1985, and during this time he was a member of the parliamentary group of the European Democrats for the RPR . During his membership in the European Parliament, he was a member of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Citizens' Rights from July 26, 1984 to March 10, 1985 and, at the same time, of the Committee on External Economic Relations between July 26, 1984 and April 30, 1985. He was also a member of the Delegation for relations with the countries of Northern Europe and the Nordic Council from 12 February to 30 April 1985.

On March 20, 1986, Pons took over the office of Minister for the Overseas Departments and Overseas Territories (Ministre des départements et territoires d'outre-mer) in the second Chirac cabinet and held this ministerial office until May 10, 1988.

On June 5, 1988, Pons was re-elected to the National Assembly for the Rassemblement pour la République and exercised this mandate as representative of Paris until June 18, 1995. On June 21, 1988, he was elected chairman of the RPR parliamentary group in the National Assembly as the successor to Pierre Messmer by a majority of only one vote against Philippe Séguin , and he held this position for almost seven years until he was replaced by Michel Péricard on June 18, 1995 out. During this time he was also a member of the Committee on Culture, Families and Social Affairs from June 23, 1988 to April 1, 1993, and then from April 8, 1993 to June 18, 1995 a member of the Committee on National Defense and the Armed Forces.

In the first Juppe cabinet, from May 18 to November 7, 1995, Pons held the post of Minister for Regional Planning, Building and Transport (Ministre de l'aménagement du territoire, de l'équipement et des transports) and then in the second cabinet Juppé held the post of Minister of Construction, Housing, Transport and Tourism from November 7, 1995 to June 2, 1997 (Ministre de l'équipement, du logement, des transports et du tourisme) . Most recently, he was elected as a candidate for the RPR on May 25, 1997 as a member of the National Assembly and was a member of the National Assembly as a representative of Paris until June 18, 2002. During this legislative period he was a member of the Committee for Production and Trade from June 13, 1997 to June 18, 2002.

Municipal and departmental level

From 1967 to 1978 Pons was a member of the General Council of the Lot department, where he represented the canton of Cajarc . From 1983 to 2008 he was a member of the Paris City Council.
