Karl Otto Friedrich Ludwig von Brauchitsch (born December 8, 1780 in Marienwerder , † December 12, 1858 in Berlin ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

His parents were the Prussian Landstallmeister of the Kurmark Carl von Brauchitsch (1755–1839) and his first wife Juliane, born von Wobeser (1759–1794). His father was the heir of Wensöwen , Sidden (Oletzko district) and Chogow (Strasburg district, West Prussia). His brother Edward was a general of the infantry .

Military career

Brauchitsch attended the Friedrich Wilhelm School in Neu-Ruppin and joined the cuirassier regiment “von der Marwitz” of the Prussian army in July 1795 as a standard junker . As a secondary lieutenant he took part in the battle of Auerstedt during the First Coalition War and in the battle near Ratzeburg as well as in the defense of Kolberg on his retreat .

After the Treaty of Tilsit , Brauchitsch was initially placed on half pay on August 28, 1807 and transferred to Blücher's staff . On March 20, 1808 he was aggregated to the Regiment of the Gardes du Corps and promoted to Prime Lieutenant on September 19, 1809 . In mid-February 1810 he came as an adjutant to General von Borstell , the brigadier of the Brandenburg cavalry. On October 12, 1810, he became staff assistant master there , went to Pomerania with Borstell in mid-November 1811 and advanced to Rittmeister in May 1812 . On August 16, 1813 he was commanded to serve as a wing adjutant to the king , but remained aggregated to the Garde du Corps. With a patent dated November 30, 1813, he was promoted to major on September 5, 1813 .

During the Wars of Liberation , Brauchitsch fought in the battles near Hoyerswerda , Granges du Roi, Bar-sur-Aube and Arcis-sur-Aube , La Fere Champenoise and the battles near Kulm , Leipzig , Brienne and Paris . For Hoyerswerder he received the Iron Cross, 2nd class, and for Paris, the Cross, 1st class. In addition, on October 5, 1814, he received the Knight's Cross of the Leopold Order .

On March 29, 1815 he was appointed wing adjutant to the king and promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 3, 1815 . On 14 July 1818, he was given the character as a colonel and traveled with the king in the summer after Russia . On March 28, 1819 he was appointed commander of the Gardes du Corps , on April 5, 1819 he was confirmed as a wing adjutant, where he was now wearing the uniform of the Gardes du Corps. On November 28, 1826, Brauchitsch was commissioned to lead the 1st Guard Cavalry Brigade . With promotion to major general , he was appointed commander of this major formation on March 30, 1829 . In this position, Brauchitsch was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus 1st Class on January 7, 1834, and from April 7, 1835 was also the commandant of Potsdam .

On the occasion of the festival in January 1838 he was awarded the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. On March 30, 1838 he was appointed commander of the cavalry of the Guard Corps. On June 8, 1838, he was awarded the Order of Saint Anna 1st Class with diamonds and, at the end of March of the following year, a prize of 1000 thalers from the Prussian side. On March 30, 1840 he was promoted to lieutenant general. On September 26, 1843 he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle . On February 15, 1844, he was retired as General of the Cavalry with a pension of 4000 Talers .

After his departure, Brauchitsch received the Grand Cross of the Guelph Order on August 15, 1851 . Brauchitsch died on December 12, 1858 in Berlin and was buried on December 15, 1858 in the family crypt in Potsdam .

On May 6, 1818, he married Karoline von Calbo (1790–1823), widow of Friedrich Leopold Ferdinand Ernst von Karstedt (1788–1812). This already had a son, the later deputy Carl von Karstedt (1811-1888). The couple had several children:
