Bernardetia litoralis is a type of bacteria that belongs to the division of Bacteroidetes .

Appearance

Bernardetia litoralis forms long cell threads with a length of approx. 180 µm without transverse walls. The bacterium is motile by sliding and is very agile. There are no flagella . Spores are not formed. The gram test is negative. The colonies are colored red. The main carotenoid is flexixanthin . The catalase test is negative.

Growth and metabolism

Bernardetia litoralis is strictly aerobic and chemo-organotrophic . Metabolism is breathing . Gelatin and starch are hydrolyzed . Peptone can be used as the sole source of nitrogen , but not glutamate or nitrate . Various amino acids and thiamine are required for growth . It requires sea salt and was found in sea water and brackish water.

Systematics

Bernardetia litoralis belongs to the family of the Bernardetiaceae , which in turn belongs to the class Cytophagia . The species was first described as Flexibacter litoralis in 1969 by Ralph A. Lewin . On the basis of further genetic studies of the species in the Bacteroidetes department , the original systematic allocation of many species to the Flexibacter genus was no longer tenable and the majority of the species were assigned to other genera. Originally the species was in the family Cytophagaceae . Bernardetia litoralis is the type species and the only species in the genus Bernardetia .
