The blessed Bernardine of Feltre (also: Bernardino da Feltre ; * 1439 in Feltre ( Italy ); † September 28, 1494 in Pavia ) was a Franciscan , an important preacher and founder of charitable loan institutions.

Bernardine von Feltre came from a noble family. He studied in Mantua and in 1463 became a priest, later professor of theology . From 1469 he became an important preacher in Italy, later title: "Apostolic Preacher" (1881).

Bernardine von Feltre founded lending establishments ( Monte di Pietà ), where the poorer classes of the population could borrow money without being exposed to usurious interest. These Monti were common in Italy, France, Spain and Germany.

In 1654 his veneration was confirmed by Pope Innocent X. ( cultus confirmatus ). The feast day of the Blessed is September 28th. He is the patron saint of pawnbrokers .

His anti-Jewish sermons in the case of Simon of Trento resulted in the demise of numerous Jewish communities , including those of Trento , Perugia , Gubbio and Ravenna .
