Bernardo Antonio Vittone (born August 19, 1704 in Turin ; † October 19, 1770 ibid), was an Italian architect and, alongside Guarino Guarini , Filippo Juvarra and Benedetto Alfieri, one of the main representatives of the Baroque in Piedmont .

Life

The father, a cloth merchant, died when Vittone was a child. His upbringing was then taken over by his older brother, who was canon in the Turin Cathedral . Uncle Giovanni Giacomo Plantery , an architect and mayor of Turin in 1726 and 1751, introduced Vittone to architecture and made contact with Filippo Juvarra in the late 1720s . After his death in 1736, Vittone continued some of the ongoing construction projects. In the following years he established himself as one of the leading architects in Turin and Piedmont. He was best known for his church buildings with an original approach to incident light, such as the two churches of Santa Chiara in Bra (1742) and Turin (1745). Vittone was also a moneylender and authored several textbooks on the architectural profession.
