Bernd Nicolai

Bernd Nicolai (* 1957 in Braunschweig ) is a German architectural historian , art historian and professor of architectural history and monument preservation at the Institute of Art History at the University of Bern. His research interests include cultural transfer and migration history in the Middle Ages as well as in the modern age of the industrial and post-industrial ages (19th - 21st centuries .), as well as the history of exile and modern discourses.

Life

Nicolai studied art history , classical archeology and Near Eastern antiquity in Mainz, Göttingen and Berlin (FU). There he received his doctorate in 1987 with a thesis on monumental church architecture by the Cistercians under Peter Kurmann. After assisting at the University of the Arts, Berlin , Department of History and Theory of Architecture (Johann Friedrich Geist Jonas Geist ), and at the Department of Art Studies at the Technical University of Berlin (Wolfgang Wolters) as well as visiting professorships at the İstanbul Teknik University , he completed his habilitation in 1997 TU Berlin with “Modernism and Exile. German-speaking Architects in Turkey 1925–1955 ”. Cultural transfer and the transfer of modernity under colonial and postcolonial auspices have since been part of his research fields. Afterwards, Nicolai represented the professorships in the history of architecture and art at the Technical University of Berlin and the Chair for Architectural History and Theory at the University of Edinburgh . Between 1999 and 2005 he was professor for medieval art history at the University of Trier . Since 2005 he has been Professor of Art History and Director of the Department of Architectural History and Monument Preservation at the University of Bern .

From 2004 he worked on a comprehensive monograph on the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela with the building researcher Klaus Rheidt ( Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus ) . In cooperation with Jürg Schweizer, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Bernese Burgergemeinde did a work on the history of architecture and art in the Bern Minster , the first volume of which was published in 2019. In 2013 he published the award-winning book for the 100th anniversary of the Swiss Werkbund: “Gestaltung, Werk, Gesellschaft. 100 Years of the Swiss Werkbund ”(with Thomas Gnägi and Jasmine Wohlwend Piai).

Nicolai was second chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG) from 2009–2018 . He is president of the Bernese Monument Preservation Foundation and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Society for Swiss Art History (GSK) and the Pro Müster Kloster St. Johann - Müstair Foundation, as well as ICOMOS Switzerland and ICOMOS Germany and the European Network for Architectural History (ENAH) . From 1999 to 2006 he was the co-editor of the magazine Kritische berichte . In addition to guest stays at the Getty Research Institute, Nicolai taught at Tongji University, Shanghai.
