Bernd Nothofer
Bernd Nothofer (born December 18, 1941 in Krefeld ) is a German linguist and emeritus university professor . His main research interests are Indonesian etymologies, Indonesian regional languages and their role in modern Indonesia as well as the reconstruction of the original Austronesian language.
Live and act
After graduating from high school, Nothofer first studied in Bonn from 1962. In 1966 he left the Université de Franche-Comté Besançon with the License de Lettre libre to teach German and French philology at Millersville State College, Pennsylvania. From 1967 to 1973 he studied linguistics with Isidore Dyen at Yale University . In 1973 he completed his studies with a PhD in Linguistics after doing fieldwork in West and Central Java. 1977 followed his habilitation at the University of Cologne . In addition to various guest lectureships, Nothofer was a research assistant at the Malayological Apparatus at the University of Cologne from 1973 to 1981 and lecturer at the seminar for oriental languages at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1981 he accepted an appointment at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where he was professor at the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies until his retirement in 2008. He has been a senior professor here since 2010.
From 1985 to 2000 he was visiting professor at Universitas Indonesia , Universitas Andalas , University of Brunei Darussalam, Universitas Gadjah Mada , Australian National University , University of Hawaii , Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the University of Melbourne .
Nothofer was a member of a DAAD selection committee for fifteen years .
In 2006 he was presented with the Festschrift Insular Southeast Asia: linguistic and cultural studies in honor of Bernd Nothofer in Frankfurt .
In 2012, another commemorative publication followed in Yogyakarta: Seminar Sehari bersama Prof. Dr. Bernd Nothofer dan Purnabakti Dr. Inyo Yos Fernandez .
He is married and has three children.
