Bernd Redmann

Bernd Redmann (born May 11, 1965 in Bamberg ) is a German composer and musicologist.

Life

education

In 1968 his family moved to Bodenmais , where Redmann took his first musical steps on the piano and tenor horn, and later on the trombone. His musical inclination was encouraged at the St. Gotthard high school (Niederalteich) , where his first compositions were performed. After graduating from high school (1984), Redmann completed his military service with the Army Music Corps IV in Regensburg and then studied school music, composition ( Dieter Acker ) and music theory at the University of Music and Theater in Munich . At the same time he enrolled in musicology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . A stay at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim (among others with Peter Michael Braun ) was followed in 1992 by taking up a musicological doctoral degree at the University of Mozarteum in Salzburg, which he completed in 1997. In the same year he completed a study visit to the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris as a scholarship holder from the Bavarian Ministry of Culture .

Teaching

Bernd Redmann's activity as a mediator of music followed seamlessly from his studies: in 1994 he accepted a teaching position at the Munich University of Music, initially for vocal accompaniment and since 1995 also for music theory. In 1998/99 Redmann was at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and at the Cologne University of Music . From 1999 to 2005 he was professor for composition and improvisation at the Cologne University of Music, and since 2005 he has been professor for music theory and ear training at the Munich University of Music and Theater. From 2004 to 2005 Redmann was a board member of the “Society for Music Theory”. In 2011 he became Vice President of the University of Music and Theater in Munich. In 2014 he was elected President of this university.

Bernd Redmann's work is multifaceted: it includes solo pieces (e.g. "Blinded Shadows" for piano, "Incontro" for flute, "Metro" for viola), chamber music (e.g. "Goldrush - Moneyrush", "Verstrickung", "five little obsessions"), ensemble works (e.g. "Scenario", "evocación") and solo concerts (e.g. trumpet concert , "Secret doors" for 2 bassoons and orchestra, "Fliehende Landschaft" for viola and large ensemble) and orchestral works (e.g. "Fiasko", "3 Pictures", "Chimera", "Scandal"). His compositions “O” and “L´usine imaginaire” are spatial compositions for large ensembles. He also created the musical theater “Die Gehetzt”, which premiered in 2010 at the Bremen Theater.

Publications of his works

Redmann's work "Fiasko" for large orchestra was also published on CD, as was his 9 "Nachklänge" for viola. Many other pieces were made radio recordings. Bernd Redmann published a book on “Methodology and Theory of Music Analysis” and several essays and articles on Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schenker, Riemann, Salzburg's music history, improvisation, functional theory, instrumentation and practical piano playing in schools.

Awards

Redmann's works have been awarded numerous prizes; so he received z. B. in 2004 the 2nd prize at the international competition of the "Transparent Factory" by VW in Dresden for his piece "L´usine imaginaire".
