Bernd Riedel (born January 19, 1938 in Greiz ) is a German opera singer ( baritone ) and singing teacher.

Life

Bernd Riedel first completed an agricultural degree and then studied singing with Gerhard Eisenmann at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin , which he graduated with honors.

During his studies he got a permanent engagement as a singer with choir engagement at the Komische Oper Berlin . This was followed by engagements as a lyric baritone from 1968 to 1972 at the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam and from 1972 to 2009 at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin , where he played numerous roles in his field, such as barber ( Il barbiere di Siviglia ) , Guglielmo ( Così fan tutte ) , Papageno ( Die Zauberflöte ) , Malatesta ( Don Pasquale ) , Tsar Peter I ( Tsar and carpenter ) , Harlequin ( Ariadne auf Naxos ) , broom-makers ( Handel and Gretel ) , Scherasmin ( Oberon ) , Ping ( Turandot ) and Sharpless ( Madama Butterfly ) sang. He has performed as a barber, Guglielmo, Papageno and Malasteta to the Opera Tokyo , the Opera House in Osaka , the Opera in Stockholm , the Paris Opera , the Teatro Real in Madrid , the Opera Bucharest and the Opéra de Lausanne .

In 1977 he was appointed chamber singer . Riedel gave recitals at home and abroad. In 2009 he ended his stage career after 50 years of singing.

Bernd Riedel began teaching in 1980 at the music school in Berlin-Treptow and in private lessons. In 1989 he received a teaching position for singing at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin, where he was appointed honorary professor in 2003. In 2015 he stopped teaching. From 2006 to 2011 he was also a singing teacher for the International Opera Course Oper Oder-Spree.

His artistic activity is documented by numerous radio and television productions as well as a CD recording of Franz Schubert's Lazarus .
