Bernhard Abel (sports educator)

Bernhard Abel (born September 27, 1928 in Siegen ; † July 7, 2019 ) was a German sports educator and university teacher .

Life

After graduating from high school, which Abel passed in Menden in the Sauerland in 1949 , he studied biology and sport in Cologne until 1954. He passed the exams for the second state examination in 1956 and then worked as a high school teacher in Cologne. In 1961 he completed his doctoral thesis at the University of Cologne . Abel took up his post as a lecturer in physical exercise at the Pedagogical University of the Rhineland in 1963 : until 1970 he held the rank of lecturer at the university, after which he was scientific advisor , then professor. In 1980 Abel accepted a professorship at the Institute for Sport Didactics at the German Sport University Cologne , which he held until his retirement in 1993. In addition, he was head of university sports at the sports university until 1993 and, until 1990, he also held the position of managing director of the Institute for Sports Didactics.

Abel worked mainly in the field of didactics of school sports, especially for elementary and secondary schools.

He died in 2019 at the age of 90 and was buried in the Gronau cemetery.
