Albert Bernhard Büchsenschütz (born September 6, 1828 in Berlin ; † January 29, 1922 there ) was a German ancient historian and economic historian . In retrospect, what is remarkable about his work is his independent position vis-à-vis the major trends in the history of science in the 19th century. Büchsenschütz was not known outside of a group of experts because he did not pursue an academic career, but a teaching career.

Bernhard Büchsenschütz was the son of the Berlin master shoemaker Johann Jakob Büchsenschütz (1784–1841) and Auguste born. Soul. He attended the Kölln high school and studied philology at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin from 1848 to 1851 . Since the fourth semester he has been a member of the Philological Seminar, which was headed by August Boeckh , Karl Lachmann and Martin Hertz . In addition to his core subjects, he attended lectures and exercises in the subjects philosophy ( Friedrich Adolf Trendelenburg , Friedrich Eduard Beneke ), history ( Leopold von Ranke ) and geography ( Carl Ritter , Ernst Curtius ). He dedicated his dissertation on the Orphic Hymns to Ernst Ferdinand August (1795–1870), the rector of the Köllnisches Gymnasium.

After completing his studies, Büchsenschütz worked at the Friedrichwerder Gymnasium (then still "Friedrichs-Gymnasium") in Berlin . In 1855 he was appointed senior teacher and became a full professor of the Untersekunda. In 1869 he received the title of professor. From 1875 to 1897 he headed the Friedrichwerder grammar school as rector.

Büchsenschütz was born in 1856 with Alma Pauline. Schmidt married. On his death, he bequeathed most of his fortune to the Prussian Academy of Sciences . The Bernhard Büchsenschütz Foundation was 100,000 marks. Büchsenschütz also bequeathed his manuscript on a Roman economic history to the academy. Recent archival studies have revealed more details about his biography; a bust, donated by former students on their 90th birthday, is in the Georg-Herwegh-Gymnasium in Berlin, as is a booklet with songs for a party commers on the occasion of Büchsenschütz's retirement on March 31, 1897.
