Bernhard Bunte

Christian Bernhard Bunte (born February 24, 1821 in Exten near Rinteln , † February 4, 1898 in Hanover ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

life and work

Bernhard Bunte was the son of the miller at the Stiftsmühle in Exten near Rinteln. He attended grammar school in Rinteln from 1832 to 1840 and studied classical philology at the University of Marburg from the winter semester 1840/41 to the summer semester 1844 ; He completed German studies, history, philosophy, English and French as minor subjects. After the teaching examination (February 29, 1844) he deepened his studies in Marburg and Berlin . On December 21, 1846, he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . He then completed his probationary year at the high school in Rinteln, where he was appointed provisional assistant teacher on October 1, 1847.

As a result of the revolutionary years of 1848/49 , Bunte was dismissed from the Hessian civil service on October 1, 1850 because of his political stance and henceforth worked as a private teacher. During this time he resumed his scientific work and published several studies on Roman literature, especially on the mythographers . On April 1, 1867, he went to the Progymnasium in Leer (East Frisia) as a full teacher . On April 1, 1871, he moved to the secondary school there. On August 10, 1872 he was appointed senior teacher. He also managed the high school library on a part-time basis . On October 1, 1890, Bunte retired and moved to Hanover, where he died on February 4, 1898.

A colorful research focus was Roman literature, especially mythography . In his doctoral thesis he had collected the sources on the life and work of the Augustan scholar Gaius Iulius Hyginus , under whose name two later writings have come down: a work on astronomy and a collection of concise mythical stories that contain important material for ancient mythology and literary history. Both works had received little attention from experts since the 18th century. During his years as a private tutor, Bunte prepared new editions of these writings, which appeared in 1857 and 1875. He also published the first German translation of the Narrationes fabularum Ovidianarum (1852), which was then ascribed to Lactantius Placidus . The Hygin editions were generally welcomed by the professional world, but also met with criticism, especially because Buntes edition of De astronomia (1875) was drawn up on an insufficient basis of only three manuscripts. Nevertheless, Bunte was the first to deviate from the antiquated text design. Its editions remained in use well into the 20th century when Ghislaine Viré (1992) and Peter K. Marshall (1993) published critical editions of the Hygin writings based on a full review of the available manuscript material.

Later, Bunte mainly dealt with Frisian history. He was a member of the Society for Fine Arts and Patriotic Antiquities in Emden , for whose yearbook he wrote regularly from 1885 onwards.

His son August Bunte (1862–1923) was a high school teacher in Gnesen , Lissa , Greitz, Schneidemühl , Fraustadt and Nienburg / Weser .
