Bernhard König (Romanist)

Bernhard König (born October 7, 1932 in Giesen , Pomerania Province ) is a German Romance studies and emeritus professor of Romance philology at the University of Cologne . The focus of his academic work lies in the area of ​​Romance literatures and their mutual relationships. König was rector of the University of Cologne from 1989 to 1993.

Live and act

From 1952 to 1956, König studied Romance studies, German, English and philosophy in Hamburg, Murcia, Valladolid, Florence and Perugia. Hellmuth Petriconi became his academic teacher at the University of Hamburg . König received his doctorate in 1960. His dissertation deals with Giovanni Boccaccio . For ten years he worked in Hamburg as a scientific assistant and scientific adviser. He completed his habilitation on Francesco Petrarcas Canzoniere .

Even before the start of the habilitation process, he was appointed full professor for Romance literature at the University of Trier in 1970. There he also became dean of the linguistic and literary studies department. He was Vice President of the University of Trier from 1975 to 1979 and from 1982 to 1984. In 1984, König accepted an appointment at the University of Cologne. There he was director of the Romance seminar and director of the Petrarch Institute. From 1989 to 1993 he was rector of Cologne University. He founded the Center for Portuguese-Speaking World at the University of Cologne and headed it from 1993 to 1995. König was a reviewer for the German Research Foundation for Romance Studies in Literature.

König acted as (co-) editor of the Romance Yearbook since 1981, the Trier Studies on Literature from 1979 to 1988, the Cologne Romance Works since 1985 and the New Series of Writings and Lectures of the Petrarca Institute since 1997. On the occasion of his 60th birthday the commemorative publication “literary historical encounters” appeared . König retired in 1998. He lives in Remagen - Oberwinter am Rhein .
