Bernhard Lange (pastor, † 1580)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernhardus Lange or Bernhardus Langius and Bernhard Lange (* in the 15th or 16th century in Garbsen ; † 1580 in Sarstedt ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman , religiously persecuted at the time of the Reformation and the first priest preaching Low German in Hanover .

Life

Bernhard Lange, born in Charpsen, served in the Aegidienkirche in Hanover, which at that time was still subordinate to the Roman Catholic Church and the papacy , initially as sexton under the pastor Johannes Holthusen . Bernhard Lange was already in contact with Dietrich Arnsborg during this time at the Aegidienkirche .

Even in his youth heard long either 1524 in Magdeburg or later in Marburg the speeches of Martin Luther , so he his activities in the Aegidien- parish was initially forfeited. But soon afterwards the congregation demanded Lange's return: On June 24th, 1533, he stood together with Scarabaeus on the market square in Hanover and demanded the introduction of Protestant teaching and at the same time "the Lord's Supper in both forms, German baptism and the release of the priestly marriage "

In 1534 Bernhard Lange was finally appointed as Sacellan to be the first pastor of the Aegidienkirche. As such, he preached publicly for the first time not in Latin , but in German. He was also the first to preach in Low German during communion services and baptisms . For this reason he was "hated and persecuted by the pastor" Holzhausen [... as well as] by other distinguished people, who also worked at the Aegidienkirche and was attached to the papacy. " And for this reason Lange left the city of Hanover and took a position as pastor in Eldagsen at the Church of St. Alexandri as the first Protestant pastor in 1542 at the latest .

From there, however, he was also expelled by the Augsburg Interim issued by Emperor Charles V in 1548 : “For the sake of the truth” Bernhard Lange also left Eldagsen after Johannes Vahrenholz had been appointed as Lange's successor as pastor in Eldagsen in 1547.

After he had “built on the misery for a number of years”, he was called to the preaching office in Sarstedt, but according to tradition he had little success in proclaiming the Protestant faith. Lange died in Sarstedt in 1580.

Ludolf Lange , born in Hanover in 1547, was one of Bernhard Lange's successors as a Protestant preacher at the Hanoverian Aegidienkirche.

Plaque

According to the preacher Johann Anton Strubberg , behind the altar of the Aegidien Church, a commemorative plaque, probably destroyed today, is said to have been installed after 1580 , which - again in Latin - commemorated the deceased preacher:

"Bernhardus Langius Garpensis antea in papatu sacellanus huius ecclesiae propter veritatem secessit from oppido Eldagsen. Mortuus anno 1580. in oppido Sarstede. "

Translation: Bernhard Lange from Garbsen, previously during the papal time Sacellan of this church, left the place Eldagsen for the sake of the truth. He died in the town of Sarstedt in 1580.
