Ludolf Lange (theologian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludolf Lange (also: Ludolph Lange and Ludolphus Langius ; * 1547 in Hanover ; † September 1, 1626 ibid) was a German clergyman , chronicler and educator .

Life

Ludolf Lange was born in Hanover in 1547 in the parish of the Aegidienkirche . After attending school, he enrolled on May 22, 1566 in Wittenberg at the local university for theology .

According to the church book of the Marktkirche , Lange worked from 1572 to 1574 in his hometown as vice-principal at the Latin School, the Old Town School, from which the Ratsgymnasium later emerged. Lange and his students performed comedies based on biblical themes on the school premises. In connection with his students, there is also a story from this period that documents Lange's belief in the devil.

In 1574, Lange married Catharina Pollmann, one of 21 children of the Hanoverian citizen Jost Pollmann. In March of the same year he took over the duties of a preacher at the Hanoverian Aegidienkirche as the successor to Johannes Grell .

Lange has made a name for himself as a chronicler, especially with his chronicle for the period from 1560 to 1622.

In 1605 Lange, together with Christoph Janus, denounced in writing and in great detail two women who were then persecuted as witches ; the Wisselsche and the Hertsche .

As a result of his own experiences, Lange also wrote a chronicle of the plague , which he later became a victim of, in the church book of the Aegidienkirche for the period from 1566 to 1610 (or 1625) .

Ludolf Lange was buried in the Aegidienkirche. His grave slab - no longer preserved today - was later described by the Hanoverian chronicler Johann Heinrich Redecker . This made it possible to reproduce, supplement and translate the Latin inscription in the directory of German inscriptions .
