Bernhard Mergner

G. Bernhard F. Mergner (* 1953 ) is a German jazz musician ( trumpet , orchestra direction, composition).

Live and act

Mergner, who grew up in a musical family, learned the piano and violin, and later also the organ and various wind instruments. He first decided to study classical trumpet in Nuremberg with Werner Fink and in Munich with Paul Lachenmeir , then, after graduating in school music, he decided to study jazz, which he began with Manfred Schoof and at the Hilversum Conservatory with Ack and Jerry van Rooyen , Erik van Lier , Kenny Napper and Cees Smal and graduated with a diploma.

Mergner was out with his own band, but also worked with Conny Bauer , Ulrich Gumpert , Michael Formanek , Herb Geller and Tom van der Geld . He was a member of the German-French jazz ensemble led by Albert Mangelsdorff and then belonged to the Berlin Jazz Workshop Orchestra , with which he recorded two albums for FMP . He also played records with Klaus Lenz , Sigi Busch and John Tchicai . With Joel Drouin he directed the Ensemble Jazz Componium , which appeared at Expo 2000 , among others .

Mergner composed not only for jazz groups, but also for symphony orchestras. After teaching positions at, among others, the music academies in Bremen and Hamburg, he has been professor for trumpet and ensemble playing at the Liszt School of Music Weimar since 1996 .
