Bernhard Otterpohl (born February 2, 1881 in Strasbourg , † 1963 in Munich ) was a painter and restorer .

Life

After studying at the Munich Art Academy with Martin von Feuerstein and Angelo Jank , among others , Bernhard Otterpohl worked primarily as a painter of religious motifs and still lifes and as a restorer . He trained his knowledge of medieval painting by painting numerous exact copies of works by old masters ( Titian , Raphael , Procaccini and many others). Finally, he himself developed a binding agent whose chemical composition was on a par with that of the old masters. This medium was used, among other things, in the production of Xaver Dietrich's painting The Holy Communion on the high altar of the St. Magdalenenkirche in Strasbourg, which was completed after the First World War .

Otterpohl worked as a restorer on numerous historical buildings. On the town hall front in Wasserburg am Inn , he made the pictures for the eight blind niches based on sketches by Maximilian von Mann, after there were hardly any traces of the original painting on the building from the 15th century. Around 1938 he restored the fresco portrait Die Sendlinger Bauernschlacht by Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Elder in the old Sendlinger Church of St.Margareth. Also that year he restored the high altar painting in the parish church of St. Martin in Garmisch.

After the Second World War, Bernhard Otterpohl secured the wall frescoes in the heavily damaged Golden Hall of Augsburg City Hall. He later restored the acutely endangered collection of painting fragments in the Golden Hall, following the custom of the time, designing some of the gaps according to his own preferences. In 1954 the restorer took care of the restoration of the frescoes in the Fugger House's courtyard .

At the beginning of the 20th century, Bernhard Otterpohl maintained an artistic and literary circle to which Ludwig Thoma also belonged. He was related by marriage to the church painter Anton Waller through his sister Maria Otterpohl, an actress. He was also an uncle of the animal painter and falconer Renz Waller .
