Bernhard Sallmann

Bernhard Sallmann (* 1967 in Linz , Austria ) is a German freelance filmmaker. He lives in Berlin .

Life

Sallmann grew up in Ansfelden and graduated from the Bundesrealgymnasium Traun in 1985 . After completing his civil service , he studied journalism , communication studies and German studies at the University of Salzburg and, from 1988, media studies at the Free University of Berlin . In his thesis he deals with the French filmmaker couple Straub-Huillet .

In his films, the filmmaker mainly deals with topics from his adopted home Berlin and the Brandenburg area. The Lausitz in particular learns through his works the Lausitz 20x90 and dreams of the Lausitz , which together with the freedom of trees form the "Lausitz trilogy" special attention. Static settings and powerful imagery characterize The Freedom of Trees and The Bad Field . In the latter, Sallmann dedicates himself to a topic outside of Germany for the first time and goes in search of clues in his hometown Ansfelden . His cinematic engagement with August Strindberg in Die Welt für sich und die Welt für mich also leads to Austria . His documentary film Fastentuch 1472 stages and interprets the late medieval Great Fastentuch in Zittau . Sallmann describes himself as an outsider on the film scene, whose work does not follow the logic of commercial cinema.
