The Bundesrealgymnasium Traun is a general secondary school in the Linz-Land district .

history

Seating steps of the BRG Traun

The Bundesrealgymnasium in the town of Traun was founded in the 1970/71 school year as a branch of the Ramsauergymnasium in Linz . The rapid population growth in the south of Linz and the increased need for higher education made it necessary to provide young people with an increased range of well-founded general education. After makeshift arrangements in the St. Martin secondary school and the St. Dionysen elementary school, the permanent home in Traun, Schulstrasse 59, could be moved into at the beginning of the 1973/74 school year.

The building by the architects Gerhard F. Müller and Helmut Eisenmenger was considered a model of modern school architecture in the 1970s. In contrast to conventional schools, the BRG Traun, which together with the Federal Trade Academy and Federal Trade School Traun forms the Federal School Center Traun, was built according to the most modern aspects. The building does not give the visitor the impression of a school with authoritarian rigor according to traditional standards, but rather it radiates a homely atmosphere due to the spaciousness and the unusual furnishings. The BRG Traun became independent on September 1, 1975, and Wolfram Setka was the first director to run the school until January 31, 1994. Since its foundation, the Traun BRG has seen itself as a local school for the Linz-Land district south of the state capital Linz. Today it has a catchment area of around 50,000 inhabitants.

An extension was built between 2015 and 2016.

School types

Founded as a high school with a scientific upper level, the school partners have been interested in the development of new and the improvement of existing school types from the start. As early as the 1978/79 school year, an economics high school for girls from the 3rd grade was added. The main factors behind the introduction of this type of school were the practical subjects and the choice between Latin and a second foreign language in the upper level. In the course of the gender discussion in the 1990s and because of the waning interest, this type of school was abandoned and a completely redesigned lower and upper level developed instead. It was decided that in the lower grades, in addition to the traditional Realgymnasium, focus classes with a musical, creative, scientific and linguistic focus from the 3rd grade onwards. These focus types were continued as a continuum in the upper school, the conventional Realgymnasium abolished from the 5th grade. In the school year 2009/10 a modular system was introduced from the 2nd to the 4th grade. The students will now stay together for four years.

The following school types are therefore offered at the BRG Traun:

Lower level

Realgymnasium with modules from 3rd to 4th grade You can choose between 7 modules, each of which is taught 2 hours for three years: KlangBILD, europaREISEN, forscherNATUR, BREATHPAUSE, datenMODEL, READING SCENE, BildIDEE

Upper school

From 2012 to 2017 the school experiment “Modular Upper Level” was carried out. A new upper level model has been available since 2017: NOVI (New Upper Level with Increased Individualization). By reducing the number of lessons in almost all subjects, it is possible to offer a wide range of so-called elective modules from the 10th grade. There are seven focal points in total. The pupils can choose from a range of around 100 elective modules.

General

The BRG Traun is the first and so far only public AHS that offers an interlinked all-day school , in the school year 2011/12 two first and two second grades. In this type of school, lessons, exercise and free time alternate in an educationally meaningful way. Social learning is a compulsory subject of its own in the first two grades. All first and second grades have 1 week of SOLE ( social learning ). Peer mediation, mentoring and project-based learning have been anchored at the BRG Traun for many years. The Maturaball has been held in the school's premises since 1979. In 1981 and 1986, respectively, 2 blind students graduated from high school. Since 2002, a championship in the mental arithmetic game Blitzkopf has been held every year with the participation of almost all classes.
