Bernhard Stoewer

Bernhard Stoewer (born April 16, 1834 in Pyritz ; † July 4, 1908 in Ems ) was a German mechanic and entrepreneur. He founded the Stoewer company based in Szczecin and demonstrated a flair for new and unknown products that later became very popular.

Life

After attending school in Pomerania, Bernhard Stoewer learned to be a mechanic and gunsmith . In 1857 he founded a mechanic's workshop in Greifenhagen . After he had succeeded in repairing a sewing machine with the Szczecin military administration , he moved to the provincial capital in 1858 . In the same year he started the production of sewing machines in his repair workshop at Breiten Straße 10.

In 1865 Stoewer received his first diploma for several of his machines at the trade and industrial exhibition in Stettin. In 1871 he had his first factory and residential building built on Warsower Strasse and the corner of Nemitzer Strasse. In 1881 his son-in-law Carl Wasmuth became a partner.

In 1893 Stoewer began producing bicycles and in 1896 converted its business into a stock corporation . In the same year he founded his second company, the "Stettiner Eisenwerk Bernhard Stoewer sen." , In which his sons Emil and Bernhard worked in management positions. Machine tools and bicycle parts were initially produced here, and the sons soon turned to vehicle construction.

Bernhard Stoewer senior began producing typewriters in 1903 . One of his machines was awarded a gold medal at the 1907 Typewriter Exhibition in Venice .

After Bernhard Stoewer had celebrated his 50th business anniversary on April 2nd, 1908, he retired to Ems , where he died a few weeks later.
