Bernhard Nikolaus Walz (born July 27, 1939 in Berlin ; † August 26, 2009 in Wuppertal ) was a German engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering .

Life

Bernhard Walz studied civil engineering with a focus on construction and transport at the TU Berlin . From 1965 he was a scientific assistant, later a senior engineer at the chair for foundation engineering and soil mechanics . In 1971 he was appointed professor in Berlin. In 1975 he was with the work "The size and distribution of the earth pressure on a circular caisson" to Dr. Ing. PhD .

1978 got rolling a call to the University of Wuppertal on the Department of Underground Construction, foundation engineering and soil mechanics . Among other things, he was dean (1985–1987) and vice dean (1983–1985 and 1989–1991) of the civil engineering department, from 1991 to 1995 prorector for studies and teaching at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and chairman of the commission for teaching, studies and study reform. From 1992 to 2000 Walz was one of the elected expert reviewers of the German Research Foundation (DFG) . From 1996 to 2003 he was chairman of the doctoral committee of the civil engineering department. In 2004 he retired .

Walz was a member of the following standards committees: Safety in earthworks and foundation engineering (DIN 1054), subsoil, calculation methods (DIN 4017, DIN 4019, DIN 4084, DIN 4085) and diaphragm walls (DIN 4126).

He became known for the tunnel solution at the Burgholz State Forest, the traffic connection between the Wuppertal Südhöhen and the Sonnborner Kreuz. Bernhard Walz and his colleague Hermann Schütz came up with the mining tunnel solution through a diploma thesis by Bernhard Wagenbach in 1984. In 2006, the Burgholz tunnel, the largest road tunnel in North Rhine-Westphalia, was completed.
