Bernhard Witte (* in Wismar ; † February 4, 1442 in Doberan ) was a German Cistercian and abbot of the Doberan Monastery .
Life
Bernhard Witte was a son of the mayor of Wismar Nicolaus Witte. He was determined to be a monk of the Cistercians and, as the successor to Abbot Hermann Bokholt, he was abbot of Doberan Monastery from 1424 to 1442. Around 1430 he is also mentioned in documents from the city of Wismar in connection with the execution of the Wismar mayor Johann Bantzkow in 1427 and the construction of the Bantzkow Atonement Chapel in 1430. Pope Martin V appointed Abbot Bernhard as curator of the University of Rostock in 1430 , after the chancellorship in 1429 after the death of Bishop Heinrich III. from Wangelin to the new Schwerin Bishop Hermann III. Köppen was the second chancellor in the history of the university. Witte's Gothic grave slab is preserved in the Doberan Minster .
His brother Nicolaus Witte also became a clergyman and matriculated in Rostock in 1430, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1432 .
