Bernstein am Wald is a district of Schwarzenbach am Wald in the Hof district . The place has around 400 inhabitants and is located in the Franconian Forest in Bavaria .

Broken diabase on Galgenberg

At Bernstein am Wald, the geotope Diabasbruch is located on Galgenberg. It opens up dark diabase from the Upper Devonian . This volcanic rock was formed from basaltic lava that flowed under the sea in cushion-shaped rock bodies.

The quarry has been identified by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU) as a geoscientifically valuable geotope (geotope number: 475A003). It was also awarded the official seal of approval for Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes by the LfU .
