from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Agnes Clara Bertha Dißmann (born October 3, 1874 in Berlin ; † March 27, 1954 in Langebrück ) was a German author of housekeeping and cookery books . Her main work is the guide for stove and house , which appeared from 1912 to 1941 in a total of 23 editions with approx. 200,000 copies.

Life

Bertha Dißmann was born in Berlin, but later lived in Dresden . From 1903 to 1912 she was the head of the domestic school of the Inner Mission in Dresden. Such household schools emerged as part of the women's and reform movement and were intended to support young women in acquiring skills in cooking, baking, sewing, handicrafts and cleaning. The focus was initially on preparing for a future marriage, and later on general vocational training for women.

In 1920 the community of Langebrück north of Dresden was first mentioned as Dißmann's residence, where she first lived on Bruhmstraße 11, later on Höntzschstraße 8 and from 1926 in her own house at Höntzschstraße 6. She remained unmarried throughout her life and died in 1954 in her house in Langebrück.

She became known as the author of numerous books and publications on the subject of housekeeping and cooking. In addition to her own publications, she was also involved as a freelancer in the publication of other books and from 1935 worked for the housewife publishing company Berlin-Tempelhof . In 1924 the German Ministry of Health published a leaflet that it had drawn up, The most important edible and harmful mushrooms .

In 2013, the local council of Langebrück decided unanimously to name a newly constructed street in the district after Bertha Dißmann. After discussions about their role during the First World War and the Nazi era, the decision in the Dresden city council was suspended for the time being. The reason was some controversial statements in her books, which could be interpreted as support for the war and National Socialism. However, research revealed that Bertha Dißmann was never a member of the NSDAP and the statements are to be seen in the context of the time. On December 12, 2013, the city council enforced the street naming with a narrow majority.
