Berthold Dücker

Berthold Dücker (born October 26, 1947 in Geismar ) is a German journalist .

Career

Dücker was born in Geisa / Rhön, which is located directly on the inner-German border. In July 1964, he completed his education at the general polytechnic high school in Geisa. A few weeks later, on August 24, 1964, at the age of 16, he crossed the inner-German border with the help of a pair of pincers and fled to Setzelbach in Hesse . After a stay in the refugee camp at the Margarethenhütte in Gießen, he started training as a typesetter at the Fuldaer Zeitung , which he had to break off due to health problems.

Instead, he took the professional path of a journalist. From May 1, 1965 to April 30, 1967, he completed a traineeship at the Fuldaer Volkszeitung and during this time he had first contact with the observation base Point Alpha of the US Army. In 1968/69 he was an editor at the Holsteinischer Courier in Neumünster, then moved to the Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung as deputy head of the local affairs / country department and in 1971 came to the church newspaper for the diocese of Hildesheim as chief editor .

From 1975 to 1977 he was deputy editor-in-chief of the Hannoversche Wochenblatt , from 1977 to 1984 editor-in-chief of Kehrwieder am Sonntag . In 1985 he co-founded the Neue Zeitung for the Hildesheim area, from 1985 to 1989 editor-in-chief at Extra Tip in Kassel and from 1990 to 1993 editor-in-chief at Kreisbote in Weilheim. After years of separation from his family, he returned to the Thuringian Rhön and on April 1, 1993 took over the post of editor-in-chief at the Südthüringer Zeitung , which he held until 2009.

Commitment to Point Alpha

When he heard about the plans to renaturate the site of the abandoned Point Alpha base in the spring of 1995, he mobilized public protests and achieved that the entire building complex was placed under a preservation order. The Grenzmuseum Rhön Point Alpha e.V., founded on June 29, 1995 . V. , chaired by Dücker, began building what is now the memorial. In 2003 he initiated the German Unity Board of Trustees , of which he is Vice President and which has been awarding the Point Alpha Prize since 2005 for services to the unity of Germany and Europe in peace and freedom . Since the Point Alpha Foundation was set up on January 1, 2008, he has been Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Point Alpha e. V.
