Berthold Faust (* 1935 in Hofheim am Taunus ; † October 8, 2016 , in Kriftel) was a German painter and graphic artist. He is particularly known for his realistic animal drawings. In order to reproduce even the smallest details exactly, he uses his own careful observations of nature, as well as photographs, specimens and the microscope. The lessons with Ludwig Meidner during the time of the Hofheim artist circle were formative in his artistic career .

Career

Berthold Faust is a trained typographer and graphic artist, he worked in three different advertising agencies in Frankfurt, after four years as a layouter followed seven years as art director, and finally two years as creative director . All this time he studied painting with Josef Faust, Oswald Fach, Wilhelm Görlich and Ludwig Meidner . In search of idealistic commitment, he turned away from the advertising industry, got involved in nature conservation and became a full-time freelance illustrator.

While he was known in his youth for drawings and pictures of the historic old town of Hofheim, he soon devoted himself to nature, especially the bird world. The emerging interest in nature in Germany in the 1970s provided a good opportunity for this. Faust's first publication ( Save the Birds , 1977) became a bestseller. Since then he has illustrated numerous books with the aim of knowledge and conservation of nature. Faust's work has been exhibited frequently, and in 1995 his exhibition Nature in Portraits — Pictures by Berthold Faust toured Germany. He is considered one of the most important natural history illustrators in Germany, whose representations (and views) of endangered animal species are in demand, as documented by numerous press reports.
