The scaly Blennies (Labrisomidae) inhabit with 20 genera and about 120 species mostly tropical regions of the Atlantic and Pacific.

features

The animals, which are usually only 2 to 35 centimeters in size, have no swim bladder and live as ground dwellers in rock biotopes or in algae stocks. Your body is covered in cycloid scales. The scales are never embedded in the skin. The dorsal fin has more hard than soft rays, some species only have hard rays. They often have cirrus-like skin growths over the nostrils, eyes and on the neck.

Reproduction

Males have a territory that they defend against other males. After a female has been attracted, and after a courtship, the eggs are laid on rocky ground and guarded by the male. The hatching larvae live first in the pelagic in plankton and go after metamorphosis over the soil life. There are also viviparous species in the genera Starksia and Xenomedia .

Systematics

The family monophyly is uncertain. The pike slimy family (Chaenopsidae) seem to form a monophyletic clade within the Labrisomidae.
