The pike slimy fish (Chaenopsidae) inhabit the tropical coastal regions of North, Central and South America with 14 genera and 91 species . Small species that live in empty tubes of tube worms are also called tube slime fish .

The largest species, Neoclinus blanchardi, lives off the coast of California and can be up to 30 centimeters tall, but most are much smaller. In the Caribbean species of the genus Emblemariopsis in symbiosis with corals .

Pike slimy fish have an elongated, often eel-like body, no scales and no lateral line organ . The front part of the continuous dorsal fin is often much higher. It is important in courtship and threatening. They usually have spines and tentacles on their heads. The caudal fin can be separate or connected to the dorsal and anal fin .
