Betanty ( Large Rain Basin ) or Faux-Cap is a municipality ( commune ) in the Androy region in southern Madagascar . In 2006 it had about 12,000 inhabitants, most of whom belong to the Tandroy people .
The name Faux-Cap probably goes back to Portuguese sailors or the French Étienne de Flacourt , who believed the place to be the southernmost point of Madagascar. In November 1900, a military post was set up under Lieutenant Marius Vallod .
The people in Betanty live mainly from growing cassava , corn , sweet potatoes and cowpeas , rearing goats and fishing, especially lobsters . Despite its isolation, Betanty has become a destination for water sports enthusiasts, especially divers, in recent years: the largest colony of blue whales is located near Betanty . The environmental catastrophe caused by the Turkish freighter Gulser Ana in 2009, in which phosphates, lubricants and fuels ended up in the sea, meant a setback for tourism.
