Beyond Recall (Salzburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beyond Recall is an art installation above the bridgeheads of the State Bridge in the old town of Salzburg . The work of art was created in 2011 by the Austrian art professor and light installation artist Brigitte Kowanz as part of the “ Art Project Salzburg ” .

The artwork

The twelfth and so far last work for Kunstprojekt Salzburg is a light installation consisting of four semi-transparent mirror cubes that are installed on the four bridgeheads of the State Bridge in Salzburg's old town. Neon letters light up in these cubes : “Beyond Recall”, “Envision”, “Dedicated Secret” and “In memory of the hundreds of prisoners of war and forced laborers who took part in the construction of this bridge against their will and at great sacrifice from 1941 to 1945 had to work. ”The latter text was taken from the plaque on the bridgehead. Both the neon light inside and the light from outside are reflected by the glass cubes. This creates the illusion that the lettering continues indefinitely. “These light signals between the mirrors are both a space-defining element and a carrier of information. The space that is created knows no boundaries. Inside and outside are intertwined. An unexpected dynamic movement arises that takes place between the surface of the picture and the apparent depth of the picture space. The mirror is both a separation and a connecting element; two rooms are created, separated and connected: a fictional room and the real room, which includes the entire surroundings of the object as well as the viewer. Time and place are reflected in each other. A simultaneity of space and time, writing, image and sculpture emerges and can be sensually experienced. ”( Brigitte Kowanz : Salzburg Foundation ) With the project, she consciously creates an interface steeped in history which, according to the artist's definition, also includes crossing, sluice, threshold space, movement space can be.
