family

Bib Doda's wife Hide or Margela

Bib Doda was a member of the Gjonmarkaj clan, which had ruled the Mirdita region for a long time . Since his father Gjok Doda was murdered, Bib Dod began to lead the clan at an early age. He married a woman named Hide (later Margela, daughter of Hasan Ajazi) from the village of Armalle in the Lura region . Bib Dod was the father of Prênk Bib Doda and later played an important role in Albanian politics.

Fight against the Albanian insurgents

Bib Doda helped the Ottomans in their fight against the Albanian rebels of the Dervish Cara during the uprising from 1843 to 1844 in the sanjaks Prizren , Scutari and Ohrid . The uprising was directed against the Tanzimat reforms. Bib Doda played an important role in the punitive expedition, was awarded by the Turkish government and received an honor sword and pistols. In 1849 Doda received the title "Pasha" and permission to lead an army of up to 10,000 men.

During the war between the Ottoman Empire and Montenegro (1861-1862) Bib Dod Pasha played an important role: Northern Albanian Catholic tribes should under the leadership of Abbot Gaspare Crasnich and with the support of the French emissary of Napoleon III. lead a revolt against the Ottomans. Bib Doda, who continued to receive payment from the Ottomans, was unsure of the benefits of insurrection and stayed out of it, but this was in breach of his previous agreement with Garašanin. In the spring of 1862 he recruited some volunteers to help the Turks. This led to distrust and outrage against him. The insurgents from the Mirdita region attacked and burned his possessions in Kallmet . Other insurgents blocked the roads connecting Skadar to Prizren . The Ottoman authorities finally prevailed and Gaspare Crasnich was arrested. An Albanian uprising did not take place.

Post fame

With Bib Doda's death in 1868, the Ottomans each appointed a kaymakam from his family. However, his son Prênk was removed from this post and exiled to Anatolian Turkey.

Bib Dod Pasha was buried in Scutari . Many Albanians who are Catholic and hostile to the Turks regard him as the “murderer of his own people”, especially because of his role in the revolt of the dervish Cara. There is suspicion that the UK and Austria-Hungary were behind Bib Dod Pascha's support because, for geopolitical reasons , they wanted the Ottoman Empire to continue to be the dominant power on the Balkan Peninsula .
