features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 15 to 20 millimeters. Because of the short wing shape, the scientific name of the species is derived from the Latin breviculatus  = "somewhat short". The basic color of the forewings ranges from milky white to pale pale white tints. A high-contrast yellow-brown field stands out at the apex . A double gray transverse line usually follows towards the root. There is usually a black-brown spot at the inner corner . The root field has a brownish yellow color. The hind wings are sometimes provided with a few dark shadows and a pale yellow-brown root field. All wings show a blackish discal stain. The abdomen is whitish in color, except for the first segments. Due to the very characteristic drawing elements, the butterflies are unmistakable.

egg

The egg is green-white in color, has an elongated oval shape, is slightly flattened and has small, irregular depressions in the shell sculpture.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a blue-green basic color. The lateral lines of the back are dark green, the belly bones green, the sternum yellowish and the head white.

Doll

The veins of the wing sheaths stand out from the brown pupa . The cremaster is equipped with end bristles, of which the two middle ones are stronger.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The main distribution area of the Bibernell-Berghaarstrang-flowering moth is the Mediterranean area . Individual occurrences were reported from Switzerland and Hungary . It is also found in the Middle East and North Africa . The species prefers warm slopes as well as dry grass and semi-dry grass areas.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal and fly in two generations in climatically favorable areas with main flight times from April to June and from July to August. They appear in both sexes in artificial light sources . The caterpillars prefer to live on the flowers of hair strand - ( Peucedanum ) and beaverella species ( Pimpinella ). The second generation pupae overwinter.

Danger

In Germany, the Bibernell Berghaarstrang bloom moth was found in the 20th century on Badberg , Büchsenberg , Isteiner Klotz and Tuniberg , but is now on the Red List of Endangered Species as extinct or lost.
